What is that water over the front edge telling you?
That the gutter has stopped carrying it. Rain is meant to run along to the downpipe and away. Once the run is packed with moss, leaves and silt there is nowhere for it to go, so it spills over the front in a sheet every time the rain comes down hard. A green stripe down the wall underneath is another sign, and so are plants growing out of the top. A house under trees gets there soonest.
None of that means the guttering is finished. Mostly it wants emptying, and it does its job again once it is empty. I come out, see which it is and tell you. If it can wait another year, you will hear that as well.
Why is there no Swinton review on my profile?
Because I will not dress one up. I have more than 180 reviews on MyBuilder, and each one carries a job title, a date and a town. Not one of them says Swinton. The nearest are the five listed under Mexborough.
The two towns run into each other and share the S64 postcode, and a letter to a Swinton address still says Mexborough on the envelope. A review gives me only the town name, so I cannot say which side of the line any of those five houses was on, and I am not going to guess.
What the full list does show is the sort of work people bring me. Going down the job titles, about four in five are gutters or downpipes. Some are a straight clean. Plenty are a leak, a loose length or a joint that has parted, which is a gutter repair and a different job. It is why I want to see yours before I put a number on it.
Is there a set price for a house like mine?
No, and I do not keep a price list. Swinton is about as near to me as a job gets, so nothing goes on for travel. The figure depends on your house: how many storeys it has, whether I can reach the back gutter, whether it is only a clean or something is broken too, and how many years of growth are sat in there. A photo taken from the garden is usually enough for me to tell you what you are looking at before I call round. If I arrive and it is less work than it looked, the price drops to match.
What about the roof, the fascias or the drive?
Same number, same way of working. If the boards behind the gutter have gone soft, that is fascia and soffit work. If the roof is carrying a lot of moss, that is roof cleaning, which I do by scraping and brushing, never with a pressure washer. I also clean and reseal drives and patios and clean conservatory roofs.
Two things worth reading before you ring: how often gutters should be cleaned and whether moss damages a roof. The method itself is set out on the gutter clearing page.
There are pages for Mexborough and Rotherham either side of you. Wath upon Dearne and Rawmarsh are just as handy for me, and the rest are named on the areas page.
